Surveys and Soundings in European Literature

These twelve essays, all in English, include studies on Shakespeare, Schiller, Goethe, Chamisso, Hauptmann, Mann, and Brach. The selection was made by the author himself, an eminent American Germanist recently retired from Yale University. Penetrating and precise, each essay achieves what he has attempted to make it, "an adventure in empathy, in critical distance, and in expression."
