Chemical Process Industries and Environmental Management

The Chemical Industries have long been a cause for concern over adverse interactions with the environment. These include the exploitation of natural resources, environmental overload due to production-related emissions, and secondary pollution by manufactured products when transported, stored, used or disposed. Environmental protection measures based purely on the concentration and treatment of emissions are no longer adequate. New approaches including cleaner production, refined impact and risk assessment methods, and appropriate regulations are required to ensure sustainable development. These new approaches demand that production and environmental professionals active in environmental management no longer work in isolation. Hence the decision to hold a multi-disciplinary conference at which experts from the entire spectrum assembled at a single integrated event to address mutually important issues in a holistic manner. From this highly successful conference 63 papers have been selected that cover the range from toxity evaluation to treatment processes, waste minimisation to environmental monitoring, and from risk assessment to reactor development. These papers will be highly useful source of information for all scientists, engineers, managers and policy-makers concerned with the present and future operation, management and environmental impact of the chemical industries.
