A Critical Discourse Analysis of Violence against Women : From D.A.R.V.O. to Institutional Courage

This book delves into the complex world of Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG), exploring how language shapes narratives, perpetuates harm, but also holds the potential for healing and positive change. Using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), the book examines how the manipulative "DARVO" tactic (Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender) is used by perpetrators— and the broader societal context that enables it— to deny wrongdoing, attack survivors, and perpetuate a victim-blaming culture. The author illustrates her analysis using real-world case studies, then shifts focus to the role of language in promoting positive change, using the concept of "institutional courage" (Freyd 1997). The book concludes with a call to action, urging individuals and institutions to counter DARVO and adopt "institutional courage" in combating VAWG.
